What Does IELTS Writing Coaching Cover?
IELTS Writing is assessed using four criteria:
- Task Response
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Knowing these criteria is important, but simply knowing them isn’t enough.
You need to understand what they look like in your own writing.
During your coaching, we identify the specific problems preventing you from achieving your target score and work systematically on them.
Depending on your needs, this may include:
Task 1
For IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, we can work on:
- Understanding different question types
- Selecting and reporting the main features
- Writing effective introductions and overviews
- Comparing data accurately
- Describing trends, changes and differences
- Organising information logically
- Using appropriate academic language
- Avoiding unnecessary detail
Task 2
For IELTS Writing Task 2, coaching can include:
- Understanding exactly what the question is asking
- Developing relevant ideas
- Writing clear arguments and explanations
- Structuring paragraphs effectively
- Writing strong introductions and conclusions
- Improving cohesion and coherence
- Using vocabulary accurately and naturally
- Improving grammatical accuracy
- Avoiding common Band 5 and Band 6 problems

Personalised Feedback on Your Writing
One of the most important parts of IELTS Writing Coaching is understanding why your current writing receives its current score.
Rather than simply correcting your mistakes, I explain the problems and show you how to improve them.
For example, you may be making relatively small grammatical errors that are limiting your score, or you may have good English but struggle to develop ideas and answer the question fully.
Your lessons are therefore based on your writing rather than a generic IELTS syllabus.
We can look at:
Your writing → Your weaknesses → Your target score → Your improvement plan
This gives you a much clearer idea of what you need to do before test day.
How the Coaching Works
1. Assess your current level
We begin by looking at your current writing and identifying your strengths and weaknesses.
2. Identify your target
Your coaching is built around the score you need, whether that is Band 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 or higher.
3. Build a personalised plan
We focus lesson time on the areas that will have the biggest impact on your score.
4. Practise and receive feedback
You complete targeted writing tasks and receive detailed feedback on your work.
5. Develop your exam technique
As your writing improves, we work on producing strong answers efficiently within the IELTS time limits.
Why Personalised Coaching?
There is no single IELTS Writing strategy that works for every student.
A student who is currently at Band 6 because of grammatical errors needs a different approach from a student whose English is strong but who struggles with Task Response.
That is why personalised IELTS coaching can be much more effective than simply memorising model answers or studying generic IELTS tips.
The aim isn’t to give you a collection of phrases to memorise.
The aim is to help you understand how to produce a better IELTS answer yourself.
Common IELTS Writing Problems
Many students I work with experience one or more of these problems:
- They understand English but cannot achieve the required IELTS score.
- Their writing contains too many grammatical errors.
- They struggle to develop ideas in Task 2.
- Their essays are difficult to follow.
- They don’t fully answer all parts of the question.
- They rely too heavily on memorised phrases.
- They struggle to write a clear overview in Task 1.
- They use advanced vocabulary incorrectly.
- They run out of time in the exam.
- Their writing improves during practice but their score remains inconsistent.
If this sounds familiar, targeted coaching can help you identify exactly what needs to change.
IELTS Writing Band 7 and Above
Reaching Band 7 usually requires more than simply using “advanced” vocabulary.
At higher levels, small differences in accuracy, clarity, organisation and development can have a significant impact on your score.
If you’re currently around Band 6–6.5 and need Band 7, we can focus specifically on the gap between your current performance and the requirements of your target score.
The same applies if you’re aiming for Band 7.5 or 8.
Your lessons will focus on producing writing that is:
- Clear
- Relevant
- Well organised
- Accurately expressed
- Appropriately developed
- Consistent with the requirements of your target band
